An emergency plumber in Needham, MA is a licensed plumber who answers when water is already damaging a house: a burst pipe, a sewer backup, a failed sump pump or a leaking heater. Needham borders Dedham, and our 24/7 dispatch runs out of Dedham all night and all weekend.
Start with the main water valve, keep power off in wet areas and call. The age of your house shapes what a plumber finds, which is why the next section starts there.
Needham's housing eras and the questions they raise.
A 1980 Massachusetts Historical Commission survey sorts Needham into building eras. Most houses have been added to and re-piped since, so use the eras to ask better questions, not to assume what is behind a wall.
| Era in the survey | Description | Question to ask the plumber. |
|---|---|---|
| Federal | Center-entrance houses | Where do old and new piping meet, and how was each joined?. |
| Italianate and Second Empire | Great Plain Village, after about 1850 to 1854 | Has the drain line been camera-checked, and what did it show?. |
| Victorian and Queen Anne | 1870 to 1915 | Would you cut into the supply piping for this repair, and why?. |
| Dutch Colonial and Colonial Revival | 1915 to 1940 or 1955, neo-Tudor near the Wellesley rail line | Does the heater's relief pipe and waste pan meet code?. |
Pipe material by era is not something we can state for Needham, so a plumber who names your pipes before opening anything is guessing. For a failing tank, water heater replacement follows a state rule set, including a relief pipe that ends at a fixture or within 12 inches of the floor.
Two ZIPs, four villages.
Needham has two ZIPs. 02492 is Needham proper with about 21,359 people in the 2020 count, and 02494 is Needham Heights with about 10,732. The survey places Needham Center at the base of North Hill, Great Plain Village along Highland and Great Plain Avenues, Needham Heights (once Highlandville, settled from the 1860s) and Charles River Village on South Street, where mills date to 1796 and 1831.
When you call, give the village and the nearest cross street, which tells the dispatcher more than a ZIP alone.
Burst pipe or flooded basement in Needham? Call now, day or night.
Call (617) 752-0573March 2010 and the Charles River.
From March 13 to 31, 2010, the Blue Hill gauge recorded 17.7 inches of rain from three storms. The Charles stayed above flood stage twice for nearly a month. Needham's 2020 Hazard Mitigation Plan draft counts 231 disaster claims but only 1 flood insurance claim, with about 99% outside FEMA flood zones and damage concentrated in the denser northeast half of town.
A basement can flood outside a mapped zone, and policies may treat sewer or sump backup differently from flood. Ask your insurer which one you have.
The plan also names places that flood repeatedly. Wellesley Avenue floods nearly every year. Other listed spots are Rosemary Street at the Rosemary Lake outfall, Dedham Avenue at the DPW complex, Wildwood Drive and Winding River Road. Grosvenor Road flooded in March 2010, and Hunnewell Street, Oxbow Road and the Walker Pond outfall are on the list too.
West Street and Central Avenue at Rosemary Brook is noted for a sewer pump station at risk. If you live near any of these, look at basement waterproofing options before the next storm, and call the moment water starts rising.
Before the plumber reaches your Needham door.
Shut the water where it enters.
Needham water comes through the town's own Water Division, so the shutoff you need is on your side of the meter. Turn it off, then open the lowest cold tap to drain the pipes. If you cannot find the valve, say so on the call.
Keep power away from water.
In the flood-prone northeast, a wet basement can reach outlets, a furnace or a panel fast. Stay out of standing water and unplug what you can reach from dry floor. Do not touch the panel from a wet one.
Treat a rising floor drain as sewage.
Needham's sewer is about 130 miles of town gravity pipe feeding the MWRA system. When it is stressed, a floor drain or low toilet can back up. Stop using water and keep kids and pets away.
Call the 24/7 line.
Call (617) 752-0573 and give the village, the cross street and what is wet. Say whether you have a sump and whether it is running.
Town water, town sewer: who to call for what.
The DPW Water Division at 500 Dedham Avenue runs the water. Three town-owned wells at the Charles River Wellfield supplied about 70% in 2024, and the MWRA supplied about 30%. The water is moderately hard, and the town adds polyphosphate to limit calcium scaling and adjusts pH to cut lead and copper corrosion.
The 2024 report says lead comes mostly from old service lines and home plumbing, and about 99% of service lines tested non-lead. Ask the plumber what your service material is when a pipe is exposed. For a split line, burst pipe repair starts with the shutoff you just closed.
How round-the-clock dispatch reaches Needham.
Needham was part of the 1636 Dedham grant, a street railway ran from Dedham in the 1890s and a rail link opened in 1906. Today our estimate from 300 Providence Highway is about 4.9 miles and 10 minutes to Needham Town Hall on Highland Avenue, by Route 1, High Street and Great Plain Avenue. That is a driving estimate, not a response-time promise.
Dispatch is 24/7, around the clock. Neighbors in Westwood and Norwood use the same emergency number too.
Permits, sprinklers and backflow.
The Building Department at 500 Dedham Avenue issues plumbing and gas permits, with applications online through OpenGov. Inspections are not done until the permit is paid, and you should schedule at least 3 business days ahead at 781-455-7550 Ext. 1. Only licensed plumbers can be issued plumbing permits, so ask yours to file for an emergency heater swap.
Owners of permanently installed irrigation systems must install at minimum a testable pressure vacuum breaker, tested every six months through the Water Division's fee-for-service program. Failing to maintain or prove testing can lead to service termination.

.
No. After March 2010, about 99% of Needham's disaster claims were outside FEMA flood zones. A plumber can trace the water to the sump, a floor drain or a foundation crack.
.
The Building Department's page does not address heaters specifically, so call it at 781-455-7550 Ext. 1. State rules require a permit before piping or fixtures are replaced.
.
Yes. The town requires a testable pressure vacuum breaker and testing every six months through the Water Division. Ask the plumber to confirm the device after any repair.
.
The water is moderately hard, and polyphosphate limits scaling but does not stop it. A plumber can show whether it is cosmetic or shortening your heater's life.
